General:
Perennial herb from a bulbous, corm-like stem-base with fibrous roots; stems 1 to 3, erect, 15-70 cm tall, short or long stiff-hairy.
Leaves:
Basal egg- to heart-shaped, 3-parted, rarely deeply divided, 2-5 cm long, 2.5-5.5 cm wide, the leaflets 1- or 2-times lobed, the ultimate segments oblong to egg-shaped, margins toothed, tips rounded, the stalks up to 20 cm long; stem leaves alternate, lower similar to basal, the upper transitional to the unstalked, 3- to 5-parted bracts.
Flowers:
Inflorescence a few-flowered cyme, terminal on stem and branches; flower stalks to 15 cm long; receptacle hairy; petals 5, distinct, yellow, broadly egg-shaped, 9-13 mm long, 8-11 mm wide, nectary on upper surface, the nectary scale smooth, egg-shaped, tip rounded, about 1.5 mm long; sepals 5, bent back, early deciduous, greenish, 6-9 mm long, 2-4 mm wide, hairy, tips pointed; stamens 40-80; pistils 15-40.
Fruits:
Achenes, 15 to 40 in an egg-shaped head 6-9 mm long, 5-7 mm wide, the achenes egg-shaped, 2.2-3.2 mm long, 2.2-2.8 mm wide, smooth, margins prominent, keeled; beaks persistent, stout, flattened, 0.2-0.8 mm long, tip curved.

Habitat / Range

Mesic to dry waste areas in the lowland zone; rare in SW BC, known only from Deep Cove, Saanich Peninsula; introduced from Eurasia.
